We want to debunk some of the most common hair loss myths out there. If we haven’t answered your particular question, please contact us.
MYTH #1
If my hair is thinning, it must be from my Mother’s side of the family.
REALITY
Actually, hereditary hair loss or thinning can occur from either side of your family. Hair loss can also be caused by many other factors.
MYTH #2
Only men suffer from hair loss.
REALITY
Women also experience hair loss, due to heredity as well as many other factors, including autoimmune diseases, stress, gastric bypass surgery, alopecia, medication side-effects, cancer/chemotherapy treatments, trichotillomania, and more.
MYTH #3
If you are shedding hair, you are experiencing hair loss.
REALITY
Not necessarily. It is normal to lose approximately 100+ hairs daily during the natural “resting (non-growing) phase”, however, if you are constantly losing hair that does not appear to be growing back, you may be experiencing hair loss.
MYTH #4
Shampooing frequently will cause your hair to fall out.
REALITY
False.
MYTH #5
Chemicals, from coloring, perming, or relaxing your hair will permanently damage hair and cause hair loss.
REALITY
Chemicals can weaken hair and cause temporary damage, but unless the hair follicle has been damaged, which is rare, permanent loss will not occur.
