Hair extensions are the easiest way for people to have the beautiful and voluminous hair of their dreams. Finding the right hair extension that is perfect for you can be overwhelming, though. What some people may not understand is that hair extension attachment methods can influence your overall extension decision. The most common types of hair extension methods include clip-ins, tape-ins, and sew-ins.

Clip-in Hair Extensions

Clip-in hair extensions, also known as clip-in wefts, are made out of a strand of hair that is attached at one end and bonded by either fabric or silicone. Clip-ins are the easiest out of the three hair extension types because they come ready to wear. Application of clip-in extensions is simple because all you have to do is clip the extension to your natural hair.

Clip-ins are also perfect for people looking for something less permanent. As the least permanent style, you can quickly remove these extensions and reapply them at any time. They are also the least damaging, since they do not involve any chemicals, heat, or pressure for installation. The simplicity and minimal damage of clip-in extensions are one of the many reasons why they are the most popular types.

Tape-in Hair Extensions

Tape-in hair extensions are pre-taped together and then glued to either side of your natural hair. Tape-ins are commonly professionally done since they need to be aligned at the root and are applied with a heated tool. Since they are attached close to the scalp, they will grow as your natural hair grows and need to be reapplied after a certain amount of wear. This semi-permanent hair extension will typically last about 4-8 weeks before they need to be removed and reapplied.

Sew-in Hair Extensions

Sew-in hair extensions are applied by braiding your natural hair first, then using a needle and thread to sew the extension into the braid. Based on the way they are applied, this method is best for people who have thicker hair. The tight application of sew-in hair extensions do not normally work for thin or lighter hair and can put a strain on the scalp. Sew-in hair extensions need to be applied by a professional and can take several hours. They are the most permanent type of hair extension and are recommended to be removed every 6-8 weeks.
